Khentii http://www.khentii.net/PHP/Frontend/Content/content.php?page=1 Located in the eastern part of Mongolia, Khentii aimag has the historical distinction of being the homeland of the 13th century conqueror Genghis Khaan. Dozens of sites scattered across this province are associated with his life, notably in his suspected birthplace, Dadal. About 20 percent of the territory, 82,000 square km is covered in larch, cedar, birch and fir trees. The southern part of the province is mostly grassy steppe that rolls right towards the northern reaches of the Gobi Desert. Khentii is drained by two large rivers, the Kherlen and the Onon, which have their source in the north and belong to the pa Pacific Ocean basin. Aside from Genghis khan, racehorses, bred in Galshar soum, are the pride of this province. These horses are famous throughout the country for their great speed. You can find there many beautiful natural sites including Khukh Lake of Khan Zurkh, Khangal Lake, Kherlenbayan-Ulaan Mountain, Shiveriin cave, Avarga Toson, Avarga gol, Avargiin Rashaan Spring, Kherlen Gor river, Burkhan Khaldun, Onon river, Onon’s hot spring and etc. Avarga Toson is in fact two neighbor lakes called Avarga Toson and Toson. There is yellow and black clay on the coast of the lake and people from far near places have been coming to this place for over a century in order to cure their illnesses of nerves and venereal disease using the clay. Burkhan Khaldun mountain is situated in the territory of Omnodelger soum. At the beginning, the name of this forest and taiga mountain expressed a meaning castle and fortification but later it is named as worshipped place. Temuujin survived thanks to this mountain when he escaped from Gurvan Merged for several times in his childhood. When he arrived from the mountain he ordered to worship it for all generations. Besides, in Khentii there are such historical and cultural places, that mostly attract travellers: deer stone, monument and tumulus, remains of cities and ruins, inscriptions and monuments. There are more than 60 species of 5 kinds of mammals in Khentii. Hunting a wild animals for meat and skin is abundant. Animals of steppe live evenly throughout the country, animals such as brown bears, mooses, deer, roebucks, wild boars, musk deer, squirrels, and lynxes inhabit on the mountains of Khan Khentii, Alag, Baga Buural, Delgerkhaan and Omnodelger and wild sheep, ibex and roebuck are widely spread in Khar Yamaat and Darkhan mountains. |
